Don Gude had a most unusual career as a lawyer.  For many years, as a magistrate, he was the umpire between competing lawyers.  He then decided to be a player rather than an umpire.  He had never practised as a lawyer.  At the age of 62 he, in effect, leapt over the Bench to be behind the Bar table.  He already had his law degree and sought to be admitted as a Barrister, and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria.  His years of experience as a Clerk of Courts and as a Magistrate was held not sufficient to avoid the necessity for formal Articles of Clerkship for admission.  He successfully appealed against that decision and entered a new career as a barrister, a life he enjoyed until he was 75.  His story also gave an opportunity to record life in a Magistrates Court from the point of view of an administrator when magistrates were appointed from within the Public Service and full legal qualifications or practical experience as a lawyer were not required.
