The old saying "ten new handles and five new heads but still the same old axe" is appropriate for this firm.  There was a Thomas Harwood (1825-1912) who was admitted to legal practice in the District of Port Phillip in June 1851 and thereafter, until 1902, practised on his own account and with partners (Sandford 1853-57) and Woolley (1858-1865).  In 1872 he admitted his son-in-law F.R. Pincott (1846-1920) as a partner.  They practised as Harwood and Pincott taking over the older firm of Taylor Buckland and Gates in 1899.  Other partners were admitted in 1901.  The firm name of Harwood and Pincott continued until 1992, seventy two years after Pincott's death and ninety years after Harwood retired, when the firm amalgamated with another Geelong firm Andrews and Backhouse to trade as Harwood Andrews.  Harwood and Pincott's principal office was in Geelong.  There were also offices in Melbourne and Colac.  Various lawyers, including two lots of father and sons were partners and many Geelong lawyers had served their articles with the firm over those years.  It still held the municipal client, Geelong City, gathered by Thomas Harwood in 1869.

What is remarkable from an archive point of view is that original partnership agreements of Taylor Buckland and Gates from 1854 and those of 1901 and 1909 of Harwood and Pincott were preserved as well as other early documents.  Copies of these documents have been lodged in this collection.
