"And Jabez was more honourable than his brethern: and his mother called
him Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow". 1 Chronicles 4,9.
It seems unfair to give a child a name meaning "causing pain" but perhaps
his mother had a difficult delivery. Nor was he more honourable than
his brothers-in-Law. All eight members of the Higgins family who
served Geelong citizens as lawyers from 1849 to 1987 were honourable.
They were the descendants of William Higgins, a Congregational minister
who arrived in Geelong in 1849. Although Jabez served his articles
with his brother, William (1843-1892) in Geelong and entered into partnership
with him there and in Warrnambool, it was interesting to note his signature
as witness to a 1859 document as clerk to another Geelong firm, Taylor
Buckland and Gates.
