Alex Hollyhoke was married twice.  His first wife Christina died before him and he married for the second time and died before his wife.  After her death in 1986 his library was auctioned as part of a clearing sale.  Among the books sold was his 1916 war diary.  He had served as a lieutenant on the Western Front in France in the 1914-1918 War and suffered from the effect of poisonous gas used against the Allied troops.  It is sad to think there was no family member available to rescue such a personal document.

Alex Hollyhoke's entry to work in the law differed from many others.  He already had received a Master of Arts degree and Diploma of Education before he commenced a Bachelor of Laws degree and was a Senior Assistant at the junior school of the Gordon Institute of Technology.  He graduated in Law on 14/4/1924.  On 12/12/1925 he resigned from teaching and entered into a legal career in partnership with H.I. Crawcour at Geelong.
