Over the centuries that the English Common Law has existed, some families
have had a legal tradition with a son, and, in more modern times, a daughter
following a parent in the practice of law. In Michael Horan's case
each of his four children chose the same profession as he had.
Michael Horan's connection with Geelong was originally as a partner
in the firm of Ainsworth and Co. He had previously worked in the
Survey Section of the Land Titles Office. He left that partnership
and set up business in Elwood, Melbourne but retained some clients near
Geelong at Lara and Portarlington where he had a branch office. This
office developed further and he practiced there more fully. In the
last few years of his life he disposed of that practice to Mr. Basil Ristevski
of Drysdale but continued with him at Drysdale under the firm name of Ristevski
Horan.
