Ross Jaques was still 19 when he enlisted in the Australian Infantry
Forces on 24th November 1941 and knew he could be sent overseas.
During 1941 Australian soldiers had been fighting with British forces in
Northern Africa, Greece, Crete and Syria and Australian airmen were assisting
Britain in the air war over Western Europe and the Atlantic. Within
14 days of Ross enlisting Japan had attacked the British colony of Singapore
and bombed American ships at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. Australia was
at war with Japan as well as Germany and Italy.
Ross was not called to serve overseas. He served in the armoured
division. It remained stationed in Western Australia. He was
discharged in 1946. That experience caused him to value male company.
He had always wanted to study law. The Melbourne Bar was then almost
exclusively male and life as a barrister appealed to him. The post
war assistance to ex servicemen enabled him to qualify. Family responsibility
prevented a career at the Bar but as a solicitor he appeared in jury and
other cases, held a career in law in high regard, and respected its traditions.
