"Je suis un avocat"

This phrase, written by Aurel Just in his notebook after his admission to legal practice in 1893 reveals his pride in setting up business as a lawyer at 21 years of age, the language, French, spoken in his home, and by its literal translation "I am an Advocate" the changes in the law relating to barristers and solicitors.  When he commenced study each of these branches had separate rules for qualification.  By 1892 every person admitted to the Supreme Court was admitted as both barrister and solicitor.

Aurel's parents came from Switzerland, arriving in Victoria in 1855.  His mother Rosine was French speaking.

Aurel was probably the first solicitor of Continental European parents to practice in Geelong.

With his charm and integrity Aurel Just built up a solid business, gaining support from local farming and business clients.  He spent 63 years working in the law.  The firm continues under the name Whyte Just and Moore.
