Frank Just spent his early life in Lunatic Asylums. It taught
him to be tolerant and have regard for his fellow man's character and ability
whatever his situation. His father worked in the administration of
asylums in Victoria, lived in the grounds and brought up his family there.
When he and his brother Carl were preparing to enter university to study
law, well educated patients helped them to learn Latin, then a prerequisite
for a law course. He also took part in cricket matches in the grounds.
The law and cricket became dominant parts of his life. He and
Carl looked forward to joining their uncle, Aurel Just, in his firm at
Geelong. Both worked for him in the 1920's after each had been admitted
to practice. Partnerships were not readily offered by uncle.
Carl opted to return to Arthur Phillips the solicitor in Melbourne where
each had served articles. He entered into partnership with Mr. Phillips
to form the firm Arthur Phillips and Just. Frank became a partner
in Whyte Just and Moore after 8 years as an employee. He was an outstanding
local cricketer and led Victorian Country teams against overseas Test sides.
As a lawyer he was prepared to spend time with his clients, reduce or forgive
costs for those who were not well off and was known as being "straight
down the line".
