The firm of Wighton & McDonald held most of the common law actions
for damages in the Geelong Supreme Court and County Court in the 1950s
and 1960s. Allan McDonald, a partner in the firm had built up that
part of the practice with the assistance of his law clerk Glenn Kidd.
After Glenn's discharge from the army at the end of 1945 Allan McDonald
encouraged him to become qualified. He did this by studying at night
after very busy days instructing in court or working in the firm's office.
Once qualified in 1952 he began appearances, particularly in the Magistrate's
Court where his persistence and attention to detail resulted in many successes
and increased business. He continued with the cases in the higher
courts as well. Glenn Kidd had been a professional runner. He applied
the preparation, dedication and focus on success needed for that sport
in his career as a lawyer and had a large following in Geelong for civil
and criminal trials in all jurisdictions.
