Despite computers, floppy discs, fax machines and e-mail the conduct
of a legal practice is still a labour intensive business. It was
more so when Geoff McCurdy started work as an office boy at Price Higgins
and Speed in 1938. There were no telephones on desks but there was
one on the wall. It was his duty, as a 14 year old office boy, to
answer it. Fifty seven years later he was still working for the same
firm. Geoff McCurdy's account held in this collection gives a picture
of life as a law clerk. He was working in a period when ready co-operation
between legal offices was the way business was conducted and when legal
practices attracted clients by word of mouth reports of good service rather
than by coloured advertisements in newspaper and radio promotions.
