There have been at least three Geelong lawyers who were also members
of the Victorian parliament, Sir John Sladen (1816-1884), Thomas C. Harwood
(1815-1812) and Allan E. McDonald. Two became Ministers, Sladen was
Premier for a brief period in 1868 and later was Leader of the House in
the Legislative Assembly. A.E. McDonald held the portfolios of Labour
and Regional Development during the period from December 1948 to June 1950.
It is interesting to note that one of the burning political issues at the
time of Sladen's ministry and of McDonald's was universal adult suffrage
for the Legislative Council. Both were times of changing political
alliances. A switch by the Country Party in 1950 to support its former
opponents, the Labour Party, resulted in that franchise being given 95 years
after the claim to it was first made.
Allan McDonald served his country in peace and in war and supported
many local endeavours. The opera singer, Marjorie Lawrence (1907-1979)
from nearby Winchelsea, who became the star of the Paris Opera House and
The Metropolitan Opera Theatre New York, gives a fine tribute to him in
her autobiography "Interrupted Melody".
