The 19th century Aesthetic Movement with its motto "Arts for Arts sake"
was a reaction to the commercial energy and brashness of an industrial
society. Languor and beauty captured in the paintings by the Pre
Raphaelites were the ideal.
F.W.D. Moore's photographic portrait shows a young man influenced by
these tenets. His pose, his expression, his dress and the furnishings
of his office all confirm this. His 1886 and 1888 diaries reveal
a person with a sensitive nature, deeply concerned about the illness his
Master, S.V. Buckland with whom he had signed Articles of Clerkship, and,
although quite willing to join in the office cricket team and enjoy a game
of tennis before walking from home to the office, was probably more interested
in his garden, choir practice and poetry.
He was admitted to legal practice in 1894 and in 1896 he left Taylor
Buckland and Gates to enter into partnership with Aurel Victor Just.
Later they took over the practice of T.N. Whyte to form the firm Whyte
Just and Moore. The name has continued under successive partners.
Illness caused Moore's retirement in 1915.
A copy of the novel, "The one black shadow" with a plot featuring the
Geelong district by Moore and Miss Bessie Cole, published by George Robertson
& Co. in 1898, is at the National Library of Australia in Canberra.
