Dan O'Keeffe died at a young age.  He left behind a widow, and two small children.  His daughter, Gabrielle was only 6 months.  He also left records of his legal practice, a practice he had built up rapidly by his skill as an advocate in court.  He kept a cuttings book of some of those cases.  In 1994 his daughter thought there should be some record of her father at the Geelong Court.  She saw the Court's Registrar who referred her to me.  From this chance meeting developed the Geelong Lawyers Collection at Deakin University and the display of photographs of earlier Geelong Lawyers (including her father) at the Court House Geelong.

The cuttings book is part of this collection.  Most cases were during the Second World War.  They are a valuable record of a society with different concerns than those of peacetime.  Crimes were still comitted but there were new ones such as those related to wartime controls on petrol or other breaches of National Security regulations.  Some citizens required the services of an advocate in applications for exemptions from military service because of a conscientious objection to war.
