The days when school children were taught to write with the aid of ruled books using pen and ink to copy quotations from Shakespeare has long since passed but at the time Tom Price started working for his uncle J.L. Price a penman with an ability to write in copperplate was an asset to any legal firm.  A typewriter with small and capital letters was not invented until 1877 and conveyancing documents on parchment were handwritten long after that date.  The copyists all seem to have been men.  Many progressed to Managing Law Clerks and in that role saw clients and looked after such matters as probate and estate administration.
