Puzzles or proofs?  Which of these does research bring?

Research into Richard Robinson's application for admission to practice gave proof that although he suffered the disadvantage of losing his father before he reached maturity he had done well in his studies and had the support of Geelong's leading businessmen and lawyers.  Other information gave proof that he was an outstanding sportsman, had entered into a legal partnership with the son of another very successful businessman and with him had built a fine building, still standing and in use today.  When his death certificate was obtained and other research made it became clear that his last few years were dismal.  After 11 years together what caused the Robinson & Douglass partnership to break up?  Why did Robinson, a short time later, practically give up practice altogether?  Why did he sell his interest in the valuable property?  And why, when he was 42, was he living with his mother and not with his wife and three daughters?
