Miroslav Schimana - Doctor of Laws (Prague), Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria

In 1945 Australia's population was 7.4 million.  By 1963 it was 10.9 million, a 47% increase.  This increase was as a result of changes in immigration policy when post war Australian Governments assisted people from Europe to migrate.  That assistance carried an obligation to accept employment for two years in a place decided by the Immigration Department.  This policy appeared reasonable to its proposer, A.A. Calwell, the first Minister for Migration but not to everyone who came.  As most employment available was labour intensive it meant that qualified migrants who could have helped the Australian community with their training and skills were often required to work as labourers.  Miro Schimana was one who was assigned to heavy work.  He spoke Czech and German and had studied French and Latin.  After learning English "in the gutters of Geelong" he commenced to study law again, this time at Melbourne University.

An account of Miro's life during wartime and communist domination in Czechoslovakia, his escape in 1948, and his success and popularity as a Geelong lawyer is held in this collection.
