With a flourish of the whip over the backs of the four horses Harry
Speed would set off with the lawyers and their staff in the drag for annual
Law Picnics. Forty years Secretary of the Geelong Law Association
(1900-1940) it is not surprising he reserved the position of driver for
himself.
In his seventies he was known as Colonel Speed, stood straight as a
rod, carried an umbrella, wore a bowler hat and spats over his shoes in
the winter. You can see by his photograph in his Geelong Yacht Club
cap that he was a dashing young man.
Henry Speed had only recently qualified when he had to take over his
father's practice in 1892. Later he entered into partnership with
F.V. Higgins to form the firm of Price Higgins and Speed, still trading
under the name Price Higgins.
He was a member of the voluntary military forces stationed at Queenscliff
Fort and rose to the position of Colonel.
