Henry Speed's granddaughter Miss Gladys Speed was an old lady when I
spoke to her in the 1980's. She recalled living with her parents
in the upstairs part of the office premises in Yarra Street, Geelong, the
street where her father and grandfather before him had conducted a legal
practice. It was, she said, a most convenient place for city shopping.
Henry Speed senior and his wife Anne arrived in Geelong from London
in 1852. He is probably the Henry Speed shown in the Geelong 1856
Commercial Directory as the owner of a business selling law stationery
and an agency for the Melbourne Herald. He became articled to his
borther-in-law Christopher Friend in 1858 and was admitted to practice
in 1863. He could not have taken long to set up his own practice
as his name appears in the annual law list as practising in Yarra Street
in 1865. His son, also Henry Speed continued the practice after his
death in 1892 and remained in the law until his death in 1942.
