One lawyer interviewed said that learning Latin taught him to think.  John Stubbs was a Latin scholar.  In addition to gaining a Law Degree John Stubbs obtained Master of Arts at Melbourne University based on the study of Latin and Classical Literature.  He was a man of careful thought, steady and reliable.  It was said that he was more inclined to smile than to laugh.  Active war service in the Middle East, including Syria, brought home to him the reality of death in war and the consequent plight of widows and children of servicemen who died in battle or as a result of war service.  His long service as a member and President of the Geelong Legacy Club provided a means of assisting their widows and children.  The Geelong branch of Legacy, an organization established in Australia after the 1914-1918 War to help such widows and children, began in 1925 two years after Legacy was formed in Hobart, Tasmania by Major General Sir John Gellibrand.  The club continues its good work today.

As a former resident of Ridley Theological College while at University and an admirer of English traditions he was quite prepared to tackle the Vicar of Christ Church and reprove him for abandoning the beautiful original language of the Book of Common Prayer in favour of a more modern version.
