In "The Long Farewell" (Penguin Books 1981), Don Charlwood points out
that, although the risk of loss of life on ships sailing from Britain to
Australia in the 19th Century was less that that on those going to North
America, it was a hazardous journey. Because of the distance involved,
migration to Australia had Government assistance and was therefore subject
to British Government control, unlike the free enterprise system for the
Atlantic crossing. Icebergs, fire and fever were some of the terrors
faced but once a ship approached the Australian mainland through Bass Strait
there was the risk of being wrecked. Thomas Taylor and his wife Anne
and infant son were passengers on the barque "Isabella Watson" bound for
Melbourne when it was wrecked on rocks at the entrance to Port Phillip
on 21/3/1852. Nine passengers were drowned but the Taylor family
survived, although they lost all their belongings. Perhaps Taylor
did not intend to settle in Geelong but after the wreck their temporary
accommodation was at Queenscliff and he may have learnt of an opportunity
at nearby Geelong. Thomas Taylor had been admitted to practice in
England. He practised originally in Geelong and then in Melbourne
and Geelong as the senior partner in a firm, well known in both cities,
Taylor Buckland and Gates.
