"O God, whose blessed Son was laid in a sepulchre in the garden:  Bless, we pray, this grave, and grant that he whose body is buried here may dwell with Christ in paradise."

These are words used at the rededication of Henry Tyssen's grave by Archdeacon Oddy, Parish Priest of Christ Church Geelong on 16th May 1996.  The Geelong Law Association had arranged the refurbishment of the grave erected by the citizens of Geelong in 1842.

Henry Tyssen was the first solicitor in Geelong.  He gave notice of his commencement of legal practice on 26/11/1840.

An early painting of the settlement on Corio Bay shows a number of tents on the foreshore.  Tyssen had an office not far from them.  Did Geelong's first solicitor live in a tent?  The sale of his estate assets in May 1842 included furniture, two guns, pistol, saddle and bridle, tent with poles etc complete, a small library of law and other books and a good saddle horse.

Tyssen, despite his connections with English gentry and legal training, was a genuine pioneer putting out his shingle in a new settlement far away from home.  By his calling of a meeting in July 1841 to establish an Anglican Church in Geelong and taking on the role of chairman of subscribers he set an example of community activity to be followed by later Geelong lawyers.
