Geelong has a number of legal firms bearing names of lawyers who set
up in practice in the 19th century. Whyte Just and Moore is one of
those. Thomas Whyte was never a member of the firm. He was
admitted in 1874 and commenced practice in Geelong in 1876. In reality
it was his articled clerk, Aurel Just, who established the firm when he,
recently admitted to practice at the age of 21 in 1893, announced in the
Geelong Advertiser that he was open for business. Later he formed
a partnership with F.W.D. Moore. Shortly before T. Whyte died they
took over his practice. The firm's office has always been in Malop
Street.
Although it is a long established convention, there is something strange
in using the names of lawyers long since dead as the name of a current
practice. No wonder then that some new clients expect to be consulting
the persons who surnames appear on the brass plate outside the office they
enter and are surprised to find they cannot do so.
