Checking items in

Whether you are working at a big campus with a large number of returns or a small campus with low numbers of returns the principles throughout the checkin process are the same.

The points below are important.

  • When you arrive for your checkin shift adjust the keyboard and mouse to suit you. Position the screen to reduce any glare or reflection of light on the screen.
  • The position you work in should be comfortable and allow you to have good posture. Most times you should balance your weight evenly between both feet, sometimes taking a pause to move the weight from one foot to the other.
  • Try to move your feet a little, not to eliminate twisting completely, but to reduce the severity of the twisting and take pressure off your back.
  • Move your feet rather than reach if something is too far away.
  • Keep your wrists straight.
  • Wear comfortable footwear.
  • Books should slide over the desk. Lifting the books puts more stress on your wrists and arms.

Book returns
At our Melbourne campus the books are pre-sorted by the patrons as they return them, this saves staff one step in the process of checking items in.

The sensitiser should be built into the desk to avoid the need to lift the books.
