Risk assessment
Reviewing hazardous manual handling
Identifying hazards, as well as assessing and controlling risks is
the fundamental process of managing occupational health and safety
in our workplace.
The University has adopted a Manual Handling Strategy to pick up
on warning signs and manual handling injuries in order to review work
processes. This is undertaken by the risk assessment teams in each
area of the University.
Our risk assessment teams comprise:
- the Project Officer from the Occupational Health and Safety Unit – Human
Resources Services Division
- a Management Representative, such as a group leader, coordinator
or supervisor
- a Health and Safety Representative (the legislation requires
consultation with them.)
The team may also include an employee who performs the manual handling
task being assessed.
The risk assessment teams are responsible for:
- identifying tasks involving hazardous manual handling in their
work area and encouraging staff to provide input into this
- assessing tasks according to the agreed time frames
- developing solutions for assessed tasks
- evaluating implemented solutions.
Change for the better is not difficult to achieve when employers
and employees work together and cooperate to find solutions to problems.
