Workshops

The Library offers a range of workshops as part of the Deakin University HDR training program.
These workshops are specifically targeted to meet the interests and needs of University researchers, and higher degree by research students.

Discover quality information

Search literature effectively (2 hours in person)

  • Be introduced to significant databases, journal collections and other information resources available through Deakin University Library. Learn to optimise search results within scholarly search engines such as Google Scholar
  • Learn tips and techniques to make your search targeted, and uncover database features that will increase your search efficiency and reduce searching time
  • Learn how to easily locate Deakin University, Australian and international research theses and dissertations

Track key authors, papers and research ideas (1.5 hours in person)

  • Discover citation databases that will enable you to follow a line of research from a known key piece of work to more recent research
  • Find key papers by using cited reference searches across different databases and keep informed of who is researching and being cited in your area of interest

Session handouts and resources:

Manage your sources using EndNote X6 (2.5 hours in person or eLive)

This hands-on workshop introduces students to effective techniques in managing references and creating bibliographies electronically using EndNote X6. The session will provide an overview of the main functions of the software and demonstrate how to:

  • effectively collect and store references, images and files in a personal database
  • record research notes about the literature reviewed
  • organise and find data within the personal database
  • change bibliographic styles to suit different publication requirements
  • cite instantly in Microsoft Word documents

Stay up to date with new research self-paced tutorials available online

These tutorials will assist you to keep informed of newly published research in your area using RSS feeds and alerting services. They also focus on the latest Library tools and services to enable fast access to documents for your research. They are designed to enable you to:

  • create alerts in a range of databases, easily delivered to your email, RSS reader or favourite web portal
  • use up-to-date methods for obtaining documents and resources available through Deakin University Library including WebBridge links to journal articles
  • install the Internet browser plug-in LibX that allows you to search the Deakin Library catalogue while browsing the web
  • use BONUS+, Interlibrary Loans and reciprocal library borrowing services to access information resources worldwide
