SciFinder Scholar - downloading the client software from the University network and installing under SOCKS Cap

Software requirements

Authorised Deakin University users can download a folder containing the required SciFinder client software and the SOCKS-Cap wrapper software for Windows. This page gives brief instructions on how to get this software and set up the SciFinder client to run within the SOCKS environment.

SciFinder Scholar Software

  1. Go to the Library Software link within the Deakin Software Library.
  2. Click on the"Course specific software" then click "Scifinder Scholar 2007" then click "Download Scifinder for Windows"
  3. Save this file to your local computer.
  4. Double click on Scifinder 2007
  5. When the Scifinder Scholar installer dialog box appears, click on "setup".
  6. The program will either install (or update an earlier installation of), SciFinder Scholar. Make sure that any old version of the software was in the same folder (SFSCHLR) on your hard disc as the new version.
  7. Create a shortcut for this file to drop into SOCKS Cap. You may be prompted for a new application profile for SciFinder. Accept this.
  8. Download the site preferences file (very small) into the Scifinder Scholar folder.
A SciFinder Scholar2006 User Guide is part of the package. It is a .PDF file (sfschlr.pdf) in the SFSCHLR folder.

SOCKS Cap Software

  1. On a shared or PC laboratory computer, it is worth checking to see if the SOCKS Cap software is already
installed under Programs, and if it is , whether the SciFinder Scholar 2001 is already available within SOCKS
    Cap.
  2. If there is no SOCKS Cap software, download and install the current version of SOCKS Cap from the ITS Software pages.
  3. When you have installed SOCKS cap, open the SOCKS Cap window and drag and drop the SciFinder Scholar "shortcut icon" file into the SOCKS Cap window.
  4. The sfschlr icon will now be available in the SOCKS Cap window, and the SciFinder Scholar can be launched from this point.
