Using libraries of other universities

Deakin University staff and students may use other Australian universities and Victorian TAFES through two reciprocal agreements. The CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Scheme, and the University of Australia (ULA) Scheme.

Universities and TAFE  in Victoria

1. CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Scheme

Deakin University staff and students can borrow from any Victorian university or TAFE library in Victoria through CAVAL

  • Your library record must in 'good standing' (no invoices for items).
  • You can obtain a CAVAL card from any of our campus libraries.
  • You can join as many libraries as you want through CAVAL.
  • Enrolment is for one academic year (Jan-Dec).
  • You will need to have your current Deakin Card with you.
  • Visit the CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program page for more information about the borrowing scheme.
  • Off campus students may contact the Library and ask for a CAVAL card to be mailed to you.
  • If you are suspended from borrowing at the library you are registered at, then you will be suspended from borrowing from the Deakin University Library until the matter is cleared.

Universities in other states

2. University Library of Australia (ULA): a National Borrowing Scheme for Staff and Students

Deakin University staff and students can borrow from any university library in Australia

  • It is recommended that you contact the library that you are interested in borrowing from first, as each library may have slightly different registration and borrowing requirements.
  • Most libraries will require at least photographic ID and proof of enrolment to register you.
  • All libraries will enrol you until the end of February the following year
  • Some libraries may charge a membership fee
  • Visit the University Library Australia (ULA) for additional information about the borrowing scheme
  • If you are suspended from borrowing at the library you are registered at, then you may be suspended from borrowing from the Deakin University Library until the matter is cleared.

Universities overseas

The Library can supply a letter of introduction to international libraries. You should also take your Deakin University student or staff card when enquiring about borrowing. While the Library can provide an introduction, it is up to the host library to decide if they are willing to offer access to their collections.
