Requesting and linking to electronic readings

You can ask for documents such as book chapters, journal or newspaper articles that are required for student reading, to be made available electronically. Any work that isn’t your own must be registered for Copyright Compliance.

When completing the online application form, you will be prompted to select which medium the document should be communicated through. If you select:


Linking to e readings in your DSO site

You can point your students directly to ereadings from within your DSO site, by following these instructions. Links can be made directly to a list of readings, or to an individual reading. These instructions relate specifically to readings that have been created by the Library and made available through the Library catalogue.

 

Linking to a list of readings, for example alj111

  1. From the Library homepage, select the Unit materials search box
  2. Enter a unit code and check 'e-readings'
  3. Check you are satisfied that the readings list is the correct one for your needs
  4. To create a permanent link to the reading list, use the following URL:

http://library.deakin.edu.au/search/f?SEARCH=aaa111+electronic+readings

  1. Replace aaa111 with your unit code.
    For example: http://library.deakin.edu.au/search/f?SEARCH=alj111+electronic+readings

 

Linking to a catalogue record for an individual reading, for example In newspapers they trust

  1. From the Library homepage, select the Unit materials search box
  2. Enter a unit code and check 'e-readings'
  3. Select the required reading and click on the title
  4. Click on the words Permalink to this record displayed on the left hand side of the screen to go to a permanent url for the record.
  5. The permanent URL will be displayed in the location or address window at the top of the web browser. Highlight and copy the URL. You can then use it to create a direct link to the electronic readings record.

The following is an example of a permanent URL for an individual electronic reading http://library.deakin.edu.au/record=b1958654

 

Linking directly to the electronic reading in pdf, for example The interview: art or a confidence trick?

  1. From the Library homepage, select the Unit materials search box
  2. Enter a unit code and check 'e-readings'
  3. Select the link to the list of ereadings.
  4. Scroll through the list to select the required reading and click on the title

The catalogue record may display links to two different pdfs, one for a text version and one for an image version. The text version will have a much smaller file size but does not include any images.

  1. Click on the orange > marc display link
  2. Look for the URLs in the 962 field as shown in the following example. Note: One URL is for the image file and one is for the text file.

  1. Highlight and copy the appropriate URL. You can then use it to create a direct link to the electronic reading.
    Note: Be careful not to include any surrounding text, spaces or symbols. You may also need to remove a carriage return from within the URL.

 

Linking directly to the electronic reading in a database or ejournal collection, for example Ruddock's shield not totally safe.

  1. From the Library homepage, select the Unit materials search box
  2. Enter a unit code and check 'e-readings'
  3. Select the link to the list of ereadings.
  4. Scroll through the list to select the required reading and click on the title
  5. The catalogue record provides a link to the article on the database, indicated by the text access this title
  6. Click on the blue MARC DISPLAY button.
  7. Look for the URLs in the 962 field as shown in the following example.

  8. Highlight and copy the URL. You can then use it to create a direct link to the electronic reading.
    Note: Be careful not to include any surrounding text, spaces or symbols.
    You will need to remove any carriage returns from within the URL.
    The ezproxy information included in the URL is essential to enable remote or off campus users to access the reading.
