Link to a full text article in an online database or e-journal

Concept:
Link to a full text article

A link to a full text journal article may be made from within a webpage or any part of a DSO unit - text, resources, readings, etc. It may be helpful to link directly from a list of recommended readings, or from a citation within a unit outline.

Article level links are not available from all of the online database and e-journal services that the Library subscribes to, but several major resources do offer this service such as the GALE CENGAGE Web databases which include Expanded Academic ASAP.

A Listing of Databases and e-Journal services with article linking is regularly updated.

Example:
Articles from GALE CENGAGE - Expanded Academic ASAP database

How to do it:
Make a permanent URL link using GALE CENGAGE Web Infomark linksLinking to articles in GALE CENGAGE databases

The Document URL information appears at thebottom of most GALE CENGAGE screens (but not PDF page image screens). Any GALE CENGAGE screen with the persistent Document URL you can use to link to specific articles and journals. The URL is also shown in the location window of your web browser.
  1. Connect to GALE CENGAGE using this link (this will bypass the library's EZ Proxy authentication server - only from on campus).
  2. Choose a database, then Search for an article. On the search screen click the Limit... to full text articles checkbox to limit your search to articles that are available in full text.
  3. Go to an article screen by clicking a link on the result screen to "View text...". Don't click the link to PDF.
There is no Document URL on PDF screens so you should only link to the text screen. (There is a link to PDF at the end of the text screen so anyone using your link can still get to the PDF.)
  4. The Document URL appears at thebottom of the text screen so you can save the URL as a persistent link.
  5. Copy the URL from the bottom of the screen.
  6. Put the following prefix immediately in front of the URL:
    http://ezproxy.deakin.edu.au/login?url=
    See example below.
  7. Copy this URL and use it to link to the article from your webpage, or quote the URL in printed reading lists.

If you are writing down the URL you might find that it contains a sequence of multiple underscore characters. You can replace any sequence of multiple underscores with a single underscore.
