Library resources

  • Where can I find the databases, websites and other resources that I can search, to find articles etc?
    Library Resource Guides have been developed by the Liaison Librarian in your area of study, that will enable you to begin your search for information, using online databases, websites, standards and statistics, and other online resources.

  • Online tutorials that are available to you to learn how to search databases and other online resources:
    • Smartsearcher - learn how to analyse a topic, search the catalogue, search for articles, and websites.
    • Smartresearcher - aim at postgraduate and higher degree students who may need help planning a search strategy, evaluating search results, obtaining documents, and other useful information.

  • Problems with logging on?
    Check here first, for some helpful tips and advice, if you are having problems logging on to the databases, or to your library record.

  • Keeping current
    You can keep up to date with the latest information on your subject area through the availability of journal alerting services from many publishers.

  • Theses and dissertations
    Find information on locating, obtaining, and writing theses.

  • Referencing styles
    Find out how to reference and avoid plagiarism.

  • Endnote
    Use Endnote to manage your citations.

  • How do I request an item?
    Find out how to search and request that a copy of a book chapter or an article be sent to you (via mail or online), as well as how to request that a book in our collection be sent to your home or work.

  • Renew /return items
    Find out how to renew/extend the loan period of the item/s you have out on loan (if not required by another user), and how to return items.

  • Your Library record
    Check what you have out on loan and when it is due back.

Other information on using the Library

  • Locate your Library ID (borrowing) number
    Your Library ID (borrowing) number located at the bottom of your Deakin Card, underneath the barcode. It is different from your Student number.
    It begins with "X011" x zero one one eg. x0115001001011

  • Returning books to the Library
    Overseas students should return items by airmail not courier, unless otherwise arranged with the Library. You will initially have to pay return postal costs and these costs are reimbursed once the Library has received and processed the postal receipts for each package.
    The receipt should contain the cost of postage in local currency and the fact that items were sent to Deakin University Library.
    The Library will not reimburse costs paid on customs duty. Reimbursements can be deposited into an Australian bank account, or you can be sent an overseas draft(cost = $2.50). A telegraphic transfer to your overseas bank account can also be arranged,(may cost $25 or more).
Visit us
If you are visiting Victoria, you are welcome to visit the Deakin University Library in person. To borrow from the Library you will need your Deakin Card.

Username and password will give you access to many of the facilities provided by Deakin including the student portal, Deakin Studies Online, StudentConnect, and your Deakin webmail.
Student Connect is your personal gateway to your enrolment record.
Deakin Studies Online is Deakin University’s online teaching and learning environment.
Study skills obtain help with studying at university - reading and writing, referencing and avoiding plagiarism, language and style, exam preparation
Bookshop at Deakin University. You are able to order books through the online bookstore and a phone order centre. Books can be sent to customers overseas.
