Interpret a reading list

A reading list generally list consists of references to books, chapters in books, journal and newspaper articles, and videos. Before you can locate this material in the Library collection, you must be able to determine what type of material each reference refers to. For example, is the item a book or a chapter in a book.

Here is a sample reading list:

Huntley, R 2006, " A job for life", in The world according to Y: inside the new adult generation, Allen &  Unwin, Crows Nest, NSW. pp. 88-94

Sheahan, P 2005, Generation Y: thriving and surviving with Generation Y at work,  Hardie Grant, Prahan, VIC.

Weisner, S 2005, 'Managing Generation Y', SAM Advanced Management Journal, vol. 70,  no. 4, pp. 4-15, retrieved 16 October 2006, Business Source Premier database.

Book

This is a reference to a book Sheahan, P 2005, Generation Y: thriving and surviving with Generation Y at work,  Hardie Grant, Prahan, VIC

It includes the author, year of publication, book title, place of publication, and the name of the publisher. To find this book in the Library, search by keyword. Include the author's surname and a couple of words from the title e.g.Sheahan generation y

Book chapter

This is a reference to a chapter in a book Huntley, R 2006, " A job for life", in The world according to Y: inside the new adult generation, Allen &  Unwin, Crows Nest, NSW. pp. 88-94

It's similar to a printed book reference, except that a book chapter reference also contains the author and title of the chapter. To find this chapter you must look for the book in the Library. Search by keyword. Include the author's surname and a couple of words from the book title, not the chapter title e.g Huntley world according y

Journal article

This is a reference to an article in a journal Weisner, S 2005, 'Managing Generation Y', SAM Advanced Management Journal, vol. 70,  no. 4, pp. 4-15, retrieved 16 October 2006, Business Source Premier database.

A journal article reference includes the author, article title, journal name, volume, publication date and pages. Articles retrieved from electronic sources such as a database, e-journal or online journal, or the Internet, must include the address or URL of the site, or the database name and the date upon which the site was visited. Journal articles on reading lists are usually available as e readings. To find e readings, search by your unit code on the Library homepage.
