Deakin is offering hypnotherapy sessions as part of the suite of free supports to help people quit smoking. See below to learn how to access this service at each campus; what hypnotherapy is and what to expect; and for feedback from your peers at Deakin.
How do I access this service?
At Burwood campus you will need to collect a voucher from the reception at medical services in building B. This voucher will entitle you to a maximum of 4 x one hour sessions for free. If the 4 sessions exceed 4 hours or more sessions are needed, then you will need to pay for the extra time or session.
At Waurn Ponds campus you will need to make an appointment at medical services in building JB, level 2, to get a voucher. This voucher will entitle you to one free session. The hypnotherapist offers a 3 day grace period in which he will give you a free session if you have the urge to smoke during this time.
At Waterfront campus you will need to collect a voucher from the reception at medical services at level 2, 1 Gheringhap Street. This voucher will entitle you to one free session. The hypnotherapist offers a 3 day grace period in which he will give you a free session if you have the urge to smoke during this time.
At Warrnambool campus you will need to make an appointment at medical services in building B, lower level, to get a voucher. This voucher will entitle you to one free session. The hypnotherapist offers a 3 day grace period in which he will give you a free session if you have the urge to smoke during this time.
PLEASE NOTE that when you attend your appointment, you will need to give the hypnotherapist your voucher AND present your Deakin ID card to verify you are from Deakin University. Please be aware that if you do not have both of these items the appointment will not be paid for by Deakin.
The vouchers will expire on 24th December 2014 and will not be valid beyond this date so you should take advantage of this service while it is on offer. The voucher includes the hypnotherapists contact information so you can call directly and book an appointment.

About hypnosis and hypnotherapy
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation that is natural and safe. It is a state of mind between waking and sleeping, where a person is conscious, aware of physical sensations and surroundings, and yet much more receptive to therapeutic suggestions than he or she normally would be.
What does hypnosis feel like?
The sensation of hypnosis will vary from person to person. It is usual for you to experience mild drowsiness together with pleasant feelings of comfort and well-being. You are, in fact, totally relaxed. People in hypnosis are conscious and able to hear the practitioner's voice, remaining at all times in control of themselves. They will not do or say anything that they would not elect to do of their own choice.
What does treatment involve?
In a typical session, your case history will be discussed along with your reasons for seeking hypnotherapy. Practitioners use different methods to induce hypnosis. You will be encouraged to sit comfortably in a chair, while the practitioner guides your mind into a focused, yet detached state.
It may be suggested to you that you feel heavy and your eyes are closing and your hands and limbs are growing lighter. These suggestions take you into a light sleep. For a deeper level the practitioner may count you down from five to one and ask you to imagine yourself descending a stairway.
Once the desired level of hypnosis has been achieved, suggestions are then made in order to bring about the desired change.

"Session one- no hypnotherapy at this session but a very in depth discussion about my long habit. Why I started? Why I continue? Reasons why I smoke? Reasons why I want to quit smoking? Situations when I smoke more or less? This session really made me think about all these things, not just at the session but well after and even still now (4 weeks later).
Session two – was hypnotised- funny feeling, just felt sleepy, kicking back in a recliner. Did actually nod off to sleep 2 or 3 times during the session, you know when your head drops and it startles you awake. Listened to bits and pieces throughout as he spoke of the negatives of smoking, why I want to quit and ways to entertain my mind in order to stop smoking. Felt like forever- but was actually only about 20 minutes."
Burwood, person C on the importance of preparing:
"I think not preparing was a big mistake. My ashtray was still in the carport, I had half a packet of cigarettes left at home. I made it too easy for myself just to spark up again...It has indeed got me thinking and preparing for my next quit attempt. I think I will see the hypnotherapist again but this time will take away the temptation and really motivate myself (just like you can't lose weight with a block of top deck in the pantry, you can't quit smoking with a half a pack waiting at the front door!). I have quit in the past and know all it takes is will power, but your state of mind has to be in the right place."
