David Parkin is a former Australian Rules Footballer, a premiership captain and four time premiership coach has also had an academic career spanning 40 years. He is highly regarded in both professional and academic communities for his distinct ability to integrate theory and practice in advancing the life experiences of aspiring and accomplished athletes and coaches.
Throughout a distinguished career at Deakin University, Professor Parkin provided valuable leadership and profile to the course area of Deakin’s sport coaching and sports management. Professor Parkin retired from his substantive position at the end of 2008 however he continues to contribute to Deakin as a sessional staff member, teaching Sport Coaching within the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and currently he sits on the Bachelor of Commerce (Sport Management) Advisory Board.
Complementing his career at Deakin, Professor Parkin has also made a very significant contribution to the Victorian and Australian community through Australian Rules Football as a player, coach and administrator. In recognition of Professor Parkin’s significant contribution to football he has been awarded several prestigious honours including Hawthorn Football Club Hall of Fame membership in 2003 and Legend in 2013, AFL Hall of Fame membership in 2002 and Sport Australia Hall of Fame membership in 2010.
This year, Professor Parkin was also recognised in the Australia Day Honours List and was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.
