This publication is based on research of children aged 0–5 in rural and regional Australia. The topics covered include: Can young children learn mathematics before school?; What ideas and concepts are they capable of learning?; and How can adults develop a child’s mathematical thinking from birth to five years? The book also provides advice on how adults can engage ‘mathematically’ with children as they play. The authors propose that mathematical play in a child’s first few years can lay the foundation for later success in schooling.
