Our facilities

The Centre for Molecular and Medical Research (MMR) has a wide range of world-class facilities that house metabolic and medical research, infectious diseases and animal husbandry. Our research is performed at the following six research facilities across Deakin and its partners.

The internationally-recognised researchers in MMR are supported by outstanding facilities and infrastructure, providing the essential ingredients to produce innovative research.

The Metabolic Research Unit

The MRU is a purpose-built molecular facility located on our Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. Here we perform cell culture and molecular biology research to discover novel factors involved in the development of obesity, type-2 diabetes and other disorders. The unit includes PC2 labs, an EchoMRI, echocardiograph, histology core facility and microscopy suite.


Molecular Medicine Research Facility

MMRF was opened in 2010 at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus as a core component of a $15 million Federal Government initiative. It incorporates a suite of PC2 experimental and support laboratories for high-end molecular and cellular analyses. We use this facility to investigate the molecular basis of cancer, immunology and host-pathogen interactions.

Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology

The CCMB, located on our Melbourne Burwood Campus, provides advanced facilities and instrumentation to support a broad research agenda across molecular, cell, animal and plant biology. The facility has PC2 labs, atomic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy and more.

We conduct research of the highest international standard in the area of molecular and cellular biology to solve both fundamental and practical problems relating to health and the environment. The centre provides an outstanding research environment for PhD students and enriches the undergraduate teaching programs.

Health and Education Research Building at Barwon Health

The HERB facility, located on the Barwon Health Campus in Central Geelong, provides pre-clinical and clinical research space to support cancer, infectious diseases and allergy research.

Construction of state-of-the-art biomedical and clinical research spaces were recently completed in the Teaching Training and Research (TTR) building, as part of a $10.1M fit-out jointly funded by Barwon Health, Deakin and the Federal Government.

Key research groups to be housed in this space include the Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases (GCEID), the Barwon Infant Study (BIS) and Geelong Translational Research Against Cancer (GTRAC).

Collaborative Research Laboratories at CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL)

CSIRO (AAHL) boasts outstanding facilities for infectious diseases research and is one of the most advanced bio-containment facilities in the world. Located in Geelong, it enables our researchers to utilise advanced microscopy and immunology capabilities.

As part of a broad collaboration between CSIRO (AAHL) and Deakin, several of our MMR groups work at the CSIRO (AAHL) site, and are engaged in leading-edge research in virology and viral immunology.

Animal Phenomics Facility

Located on our Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, the Animal Phenomics Facility provides outstanding animal husbandry and procedural facilities for research utilising rats, mice and zebrafish models. The facility has an aquarium with a 700-tank capacity, including breeding tanks, independent light cycles and nursery. There is also extensive rodent holding and analysis capacity.

It is undergoing a $2.1 million upgrade to expand the facilities for our rodent procedural work. The upgrade will also mean that we have access to a new Techniplast 1400-tank aquarium and a dedicated quarantine area.
