10. In vivo physiology
Blue Line

In vivo testing is employed to determine the role of the gene/protein in a complex system, it provides detailed analyses of effects of action of the candidate gene.

Administration of reagents:picture of rats in Lab
- Intracerebroventricular continuous infusion
- Intravenous injection
- Intraperitoneal injection
- Subcutaneous injection
- Intragastric gavage
- Cannulation

In vivo studies include measurements:
- Body weight, body fat, food intake
- Circulating metabolites eg; insulin, glucose,
triglycerides, cholesterol, free fatty acids, leptin,
glucocorticoids
- Energy metabolism (calorimetry)
- Insulin resistance (clamp studies)
- Behavioural tests for depression eg; open field test, elevated-plus maze
