Dr Zeigler was a pioneer in the field of physical education in North America and a leading scholar in recognising the need for studies in sport administration, which is now referred to as sport management.

Professor Shilbury has in excess of 85 publications, and has presented in excess of 90 conference papers worldwide. He is the lead author of two top sport management textbooks.

He has been an editorial board member of the Journal of Sport Management since 2003 and has recently been appointed an associate editor of this journal which is published by Human Kinetics on behalf of the North American Society for Sport Management.

Professor Shilbury is also a former editor of Sport Management Review (SMR) and was the Foundation President (1995-2001) of the Sport Management Association of Australia & New Zealand (SMAANZ) which was established in 1995. He remains on the editorial board of SMR. In 2009, he was the inaugural winner of the SMAANZ Distinguished Service award, recognising his contribution to the field of sport management in Australia and New Zealand.

Professor Shilbury, originally from Perth WA, is a graduate of Edith Cowan University (Bachelor of Applied Science – Recreation) and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (Master of Science – Sport Management). He obtained his PhD from Monash University in 1995.

The award will be presented at the conference closing banquet, where Professor Shilbury will address the academy with a presentation that will subsequently be published in the field's leading journal, the Journal of Sport Management.
