Deakin announces senior appointments

The Deakin University Council today announced the reappointment of Chancellor, Mr David Morgan, for a third term and three senior appointments to the University Executive.

Mr Morgan’s three-year reappointment will become effective from 1 January 2012.

The University also announced a new Pro Vice-Chancellor (Arts and Education), a new Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health) and a new Vice-President (Enterprise).

Professor Brenda Cherednichenko has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts and Education. Currently Pro Vice-Chancellor, Engagement, Equity and Indigenous and Executive Dean, Faculty of Arts and Education at Western Australia’s Edith Cowan University, Professor Cherednichenko will take up her new appointment at Deakin in December.

She has a strong research record and interest in understanding and mitigating inequity through education and the value of partnerships in education for improved social outcomes.

Professor Brendan Crotty has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Health. He joined Deakin in 2006 as its first Head of the School of Medicine and has been instrumental in establishing Deakin’s Medical School and building its profile. The Deakin Medical School will graduate its first students in December. Professor Crotty will take up his new appointment on 1 November.

Mr Kean Selway has been appointed Vice-President (Enterprise), a new senior executive role that will have responsibility for human resources, built infrastructure, logistics and Deakin’s commercial entities. Mr Selway has been with Deakin for nine years and, at some stage during that time, has had responsibility for each area of the new Enterprise portfolio. Mr Selway will assume his new role on 15 August.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander, welcomed the new appointments.

“David Morgan has provided wise counsel as our Chancellor over a long period of time and I am delighted that he will be continuing in that role as we face the challenges ahead,” she said.

“We are also extremely fortunate to have people of the calibre of Brenda, Kean and Brendan on our executive as we enter the new demand-driven system next year.”
