Deakin University welcomes public transport discount for overseas students
6 March 2014
Deakin University today welcomed Victoria's new public transport ticket scheme for international students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander, said the new three-year trial of a discount on annual public transport tickets would make international students feel even more welcome when they come to study in Victoria.
"This is a real breakthrough for Victoria and one that will provide an even more accessible and affordable public transport system in Victoria," Professor den Hollander said.
"We want to provide the very best experience for our international students, who make such a wonderful contribution to the reputation and life of our University.
"Deakin is committed to sustainable transport initiatives that increase access to our campuses and we look forward to participating in a trial that will ensure that our international students have a great experience in our state, city and university."
Professor den Hollander said the new trial scheme was in line with Deakin's ongoing commitment to encourage the use of public transport and cycling, with initiatives including:
- A free Burwood bus service;
- A free Geelong Inter-campus shuttle service with WiFi access that carries over 9,000 passengers a month in teaching periods;
- A new Transit Hub at Waurn Ponds Campus, supporting the multi modal transport needs of our students and staff in one convenient space;
- The installation of bike racks and bike repair stations at all Deakin campuses and a commitment to make bike infrastructure part of planning in new capital works, so all new buildings will cater for sustainable transport users.
Professor den Hollander said the trial scheme for international students would give Victoria in general, and Melbourne in particular, a competitive edge over Sydney.
"The new discount arrangements will also benefit international students at our regional campuses in Warrnambool and Geelong, making it even easier and more affordable to live and study in some of Victoria's best regional cities," she said.
