Wireless internet access has landed at Avalon Airport thanks to a Deakin University Wi-Fi initiative transforming the region into a wired-in wonderland.

The free Deakin Wi-Fi means people transiting through the Avalon terminal can now remain online from gate to gate.

Deakin's Director of ICT Infrastructure Services Craig Warren said delivering Wi-Fi internet access to the 800 people who pass through the Avalon terminal every day was another important milestone for Deakin's commitment to drive the digital frontier.

"In an effort to keep people connected, Deakin has flicked the switch on Wi-Fi hot spots at busy locations across the region, including at Geelong Hospital, St John of God Geelong Hospital and now Avalon Airport," Mr Warren said.

"Using a satellite dish the size of a dinner plate, we used a line-of-sight connection between Deakin's Waterfront Campus and Hangar Four at the airport to keep people online as they arrive or depart through the terminal.

"Wi-Fi access provides free wireless internet for the public to stay connected and gives Deakin staff and students a direct link to our internal networks."

Avalon Airport Australia CEO Justin Giddings said the airport was pleased to partner with Deakin to provide a Wi-Fi service.

"Deakin Wi-Fi will keep people connected at Avalon Airport, from passengers arriving or departing, friends and family saying welcome or farewell, and staff working in the terminal," Mr Giddings said.

"A Wi-Fi hot spot is another feather in the cap for Avalon Airport as we continue to offer passengers a convenient, uncomplicated and time-efficient service."

Mr Warren said Deakin was working to rollout even more public access points across the Geelong region.

"While Deakin transforms its student learning experience by delivering programs through the cloud, we're making sure the people of the Geelong stay connected when they're out and about around town," he said.

"Feedback tells us that Deakin students and staff, and the public, value having instant online access at popular local institutions, so we're working hard to deliver even more Wi-Fi hot spots around Geelong."
