Vice-Chancellor reassures Deakin University's Indian students

3 June 2009

Deakin University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Walker, has moved quickly to reassure the University's 1,100 Indian students about their safety.

"Deakin is committed to providing all its international students with a secure environment," Professor Walker said. "Given current concerns about the personal safety and well-being of our Indian students, I have taken steps to ensure that they receive additional advice and counselling."

Professor Walker has spoken directly with the Indian Consul General in Melbourne, Ms Anita Nayar, about the matter. The University's Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) also visited the Indian High Commission on Monday to discuss the situation in detail.

Deakin has in place a comprehensive program to inform students about safety issues and makes emergency cards available to all international students. "With the assistance of Victoria Police and local authorities, additional seminars will be conducted to advise students about how to avoid dangerous situations and to take care of their personal safety," said Professor Walker.

The Vice-Chancellor will hold special meetings with Deakin's Indian students at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood on Friday and at Geelong next week.

Professor Walker said that Deakin's Indian students are studying hard for their examinations; none has discontinued their studies because of recent events. "We are committed to providing ongoing support to our international students," she said.
