Career Month is coming
Division of Student Life

March is a crucial time for final year students looking for a job in 2008. As they begin the semester, they need to be aware of opportunities with major firms and government and develop quality applications. Students risk missing crucial deadlines because they are not alert to and prepared for the opportunities available at this time. This has a detrimental effect on students and on graduate outcomes for Deakin University.

Career Month, an initiative of the careers and employment team in the Division of Student Life, is designed to raise awareness of the need to act and ensure students are well skilled in how to seek work, write applications and undertake job interviews. Working in tandem with faculties and employers, it offers three weeks of employers on campus, jobsearch support and career exploration activities. The aim is to saturate the ‘find out and apply now’ message and back it up with advice, support and opportunities to maximise the number of quality applications.

This is also a critical time for retention of first year students wondering if they’re on the right path for their career. Career Month offers a range of events in support of the University’s retention and transition objectives.

The concept of Career Month, as pioneered at Deakin University, has been recognised by the conferral of a national best practice award and a Deakin Vice-Chancellor’s award. It is now run twice a year – March focuses on first and final year students and August on students looking for vacation and graduation employment.

Academics are encouraged to get involved by: promoting the events to their students, reinforcing the ‘find out and apply now’ message, networking with these employers on campus and by hosting employer events.

Career Month runs from March 5–23 and the event calendar can be accessed online at www.deakin.edu.au/careermonth. To get involved, contact Mandy Bishop on extension 72953 mandy.bishop@deakin.edu.au or Francesca Alice on extension 43703 francesca.alice@deakin.edu.au.
