Responsibilities
Your Deakin study program relies on continuous co-operation between staff
at both Deakin University and the offshore teaching partner institution (local
staff). The following list is a guide for you to understand how the co-operative
work is administered and what you can expect from various operations.
Deakin unit chair
Unit chairs are expected to:
- Prepare unit materials which are relevant to all student cohorts and contain
examples which are applicable in the offshore context.
- Ensure local teaching staff fully understand the learning outcomes, concepts
and assessment requirements of the unit and are provided with appropriate
materials and other support.
- Provide guidance on the format of lectures/tutorials or instruct the local
teaching staff member to prepare their own teaching program.
- Maintain regular contact with local teaching staff via email. Voice or
video links may also be appropriate from time to time if communication difficulties
are being experienced.
- Ensure local teaching staff are kept in the loop with all communication
with students.
- Respond to general student queries via the local teaching staff member
who can then convey the information to all students.
- Set all assessments and mark or moderate assignments (in accordance with
the agreement). If marking assignments, return student work and provide timely
feedback. If marking is completed by local teaching staff, provide a marking
scheme and moderate assignment results.
- Set all examinations, establish the assessment processes and mark all
examinations.
- Ensure via DSO that all student cohorts have the same access to teaching
materials and resources.
- Inform the relevant academic leader or operations manager of any issues
relating to delivery of the unit. For example, lack of response or problems
experienced by students with local teaching staff, difficulties with communication
in English, inadequate prerequisite knowledge.
- Undertake a teaching visit to the offshore teaching partner as required.
Local teaching staff
Local teaching staff are expected to:
- Receive instruction from the unit chair on delivery of the unit and gain
an understanding of the learning objectives, concepts and assessment requirements.
- Provide face to face teaching in accordance with the number of contact
hours outlined in the agreement and following guidelines from the unit chair.
- Be the first point of contact for students and refer any issues to the
unit chair.
- Maintain regular contact with the unit chair and communicate any problems
immediately.
- Mark assignments (if applicable) using a marking scheme provided by the
unit chair and provide timely feedback to students. Provide assignments for
moderation by the unit chair.
- Provide feedback to the unit chair on the teaching materials and relevance
of examples in the local context.
- Inform the central office of any problems relating to unit delivery.
