Ms Mary Papadakis
Bachelor or Arts - majors in journalism and politics
FIRST JOB: Cadet journalist, The Standard (Warrnambool)
CAREER HIGHLIGHT: ‘There have been many, I’m glad to say, including overseas travel and exclusive stories but nothing quite compares to the buzz you get from your first front page. I got my first splash while on work experience at The Standard newspaper in 1999. It was simply amazing. I remember going into a local newsagency and buying every copy I could get my hands on.’
NOW: Reporter, Sunday Herald Sun.
My first year at Deakin was ...
‘a real eye opener. I started off studying an Arts/Law degree but by the end of my first year I knew that I wanted to focus on journalism.’
I didn’t expect to learn ...
‘so much, so quickly that is still relevant today. Deakin’s journalism course, particularly, was insightful and I still reflect on course content and words of wisdom received from my lecturers.’
Deakin gave me ...
‘the ability to think and act independently and a very realistic view of the media industry – warts and all.’
This has helped me ...
‘immeasurably. To be self sufficient and self motivated is a must in this industry and entering the profession without any ill-conceived ideas about what it involved was a bonus.’
Looking back on my time at Deakin I ...
‘feel glad that I chose to study at Deakin University, proud of my achievements and fortunate that I had access to lecturers who cared enough about what they did to inspire, guide and support me in my goal of becoming a print journalist.’
