Mr Alex Pearse
Associate Degree of Arts, Business and Sciences
Warrnambool Campus

ďI finished high school after Year 10 I went into an electrical apprenticeship and did a Certificate 3 in electro-technology Ö I worked as an electrician for five years before finishing last year. When I finished work I knew that I wanted to go to university but didnít know how to approach it.

I wanted to study marine biology but since I have been away from study for so long I wasnít sure I would be able to transition straight into a full-blown course. The Associate Degree appealed to me because it helps give me the skills I will need to transition back into tertiary education.

I am now studying my degree full time at the Deakin Warrnambool campus. With the help provided by those involved with the Associate Degree, Iíve found it is easy to juggle study, work and my personal life. Although at times my social life does take over my study time and time I need to cut that back! I am enjoying all aspects of my course. The Associate degree provides me with the tools that I need to progress to my chosen course of marine biology and gives me the chance to interact with many different people from all walks of life.

After completing the Associate Degree I am hoping to progress to a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Marine Biology). I donít really know where I see myself after finishing my degree since marine biology is a very broad field, but I am hoping through my studies at Deakin I will be able to ascertain where I want this course to lead. One of my short term goals is to also study overseas.

To anyone considering doing this course and returning to study I say go for it! I was very anxious about returning to tertiary education after being away from it for so long, but coming to Deakin and doing the Associate Degree is one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

It may seem daunting at first but everyone is here to help you and you make heaps of great friends along the way. It has helped bring me up to a level of confidence in my studies which I would not have had if I had gone straight into marine biology.Ē
