Mr Christopher Grimma
Bachelor of Design (Architecture)/Bachelor of Construction Management
‘I chose Deakin firstly because of its reputation in the industry for providing the most practical graduates. Secondly, it is the only university in the area that offers an Architecture/Construction Management double degree. Studying two areas of the industry allows me more flexibility with my career path.
Deakin really allows you to discover who you are and where you want to go in your career. The units are structured to give you a taste of every career linked with the industry and the lecturers are always there for support. I have been able to create a pathway for myself into the architecture industry that if I hadn’t gone to Deakin, would not have been possible.
The learning environment at the Geelong Waterfront Campus gives you everything you need to succeed. The technology and tools that the uni provides is current, and constantly being improved and upgraded.
The teaching staff are some of the best in their respective industries, they have all had industry experience and they are always willing to impart some of their knowledge if you need it. The learning doesn’t stay at uni, there are constant field trips where you learn more then you could inside a classroom. The assignments also make you go out into the construction/design industry and meet people in the industry and learn even more.
I am currently working in at VM Romano construction group, which designs and builds projects. I assist the architect in his daily doings, in which I create drawings, visit sites, attend and organise meetings, and gather information on new ways of building and construction details. Studying while working in the industry has been very beneficial for me, it has really built up my confidence, and it has really prepared me for the industry.’
