Ms Karen Richens Bachelor of Psychology, Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus, 2009 Bachelor of Psychology (Honours), Geelong Waterfront Campus, 2010 Employed: Disability Employment Consultant, MatchWorks Deakin’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus was Karen’s first choice because it was close to home and familiar. ‘I’d been to the Campus previously on school trips. What’s more, I loved the atmosphere ... the trees, the lake and the ducks,’ she says. ‘I chose to study Psychology because I have loved the subject since I had my first taste of it in Year 10 science. I then chose to apply for honours because I wanted to further my career in an area that I thoroughly enjoy learning about! I enjoy being constantly challenged and having the opportunity to earn more about such an interesting topic.’ Karen says highlights of the course included hands-on learning and trying new things. She also has high praise for the staff. ‘I was lucky to have so many teachers at Deakin who I got along with, and who went out of their way to help us understand the course material.’ In addition to her own studies, Karen was a peer mentor to first-year Psychology students in her final two years at Deakin and also helped run group activities during Orientation Week. Karen is working full time as a Disability Employment Consultant with MatchWorks, helping individuals with a disability (including many with mental health issues) overcome barriers to find and maintain employment.
