Ms Kylee Millar
Bachelor of Arts

Graduated: Bachelor of Arts, 2008
Now: Graduate Diploma of Education (Applied Learning)

After several years working as a business manager and extensive world travel, Kylee Millar made the decision to move her life in another direction. She returned to Australia – and Deakin University – where she completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English Literature and Indonesian Language.

‘I chose Indonesian and English Literature because I have always had a personal interest in other cultures and languages, especially Asian countries … I have also lived and studied in Indonesia … and I chose English Literature because it naturally complements the study of languages other than English,’ she says.

Kylee is now undertaking a Graduate Diploma of Education (Applied Learning) at Deakin and has her focus on a teaching career.

‘I chose teaching because my family has a background in education and I have been involved in teaching overseas and teaching and training employees in my business management role. I believe I have a genuine contribution to make as a teacher. I also see the concept of a learning partnership as an important component of my role as a teacher.’

Kylee says she chose Deakin for her postgraduate studies for two important reasons: ‘I researched Deakin’s course content and teaching-learning processes and I was impressed with the University’s ability to address teaching and learning in the 21st century. Secondly, Deakin offered flexible modes of course delivery. The Graduate Diploma of Education is delivered through short intensives every few months … I’ve also been able to complete some of my Indonesian components online.’

Kylee believes Deakin’s staff delivers the right mix of skills to maximise learning outcomes for students.

‘I enjoy the personalised contact with lecturers and the way in which they take different approaches to teaching and learning – including the flexible and innovative approaches to course design and presentation. The course I’m completing is planned to ensure that the essential knowledge and skills are developed.’
