Ms Laura Jackson Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition Graduated: Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition, 2007 Employed: Quality assurance assistant ‘When I chose to come to Deakin, I initially wanted to be a dietitian,’ says Laura. ‘Once I started studying the Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition, it did not take me long to realise that my passion was in food science and not dietetics, as I first thought. I really enjoyed the practical classes and appreciated the opportunity to take part in work experience while at Deakin. We also visited a number of food manufacturing plants, which gave us an insight into the processes and regulations behind food manufacturing.’ Laura now works as a quality assurance assistant for one of the largest food manufacturers in Australia. ‘Deakin students have a high regard in the food industry,’ she says. ‘It is a small industry and around every corner you seem to keep running into past Deakin students. I mostly look after ingredient specifications and organise taste testing sessions to assess our products and make sure they comply with our standards. I am lucky enough to travel to a number of our manufacturing plants and have learnt different processes for making food, including cheese, yoghurt, fruit juice, bakery products, baby food and soup.’ ‘In the future I’d really like to explore different departments of the food industry. I have had some experience in nutrition and now quality assurance, but I’d also like to try my hand at product development and even marketing.’ Find more information at http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/areas-of-study/health-community.php |
