Ms Lisa Collins Graduate Diploma of Museum Studies Employment: Exhibition and Project Coordinator Museum of Chinese Australian History, Melbourne Gaining an internship at the Bayside City Council as part of the practical component of her Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies helped Lisa Collins gain the hands-on experience she needed for her position as Exhibition and Project Coordinator at Melbourne’s Museum of Chinese Australian History. Lisa, who had previous volunteer experience at a range of galleries, was given the one-day a week paid internship under a partnership between Deakin and Bayside and she highly encourages students to undertake a structured placement. ‘There is so much to be learned from just doing it … (and) many organisations seem to take university internships more seriously than general volunteer work. It definitely opens up more doors and you are able to get more experience in back of house roles.’ Lisa decided to undertake the course to develop her skills and also to gain a qualification often deemed essential in the highly competitive but also highly rewarding museums industry. ‘I chose the Deakin course because it covered a broad range of areas and I was still unsure of exactly which area in museums I wanted to pursue.’ Lisa says the theory component of the course, which she undertook off campus so she could work part time during the day, gave her a ‘solid background’ for the work she now does at the museum. She adds that the course flexibility was an advantage, while the way it was structured allowed for easy access to materials. ‘It was great to be able to hear recordings of the lectures and participate in the online chats and discussions, which really helped in digesting the information,’ she says. ‘For people wanting to begin or further a career in museums/galleries, I’d definitely recommend the Deakin museum studies course which is well regarded in the industry and highly-sought after by employers.’ Find more information at http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/courses/results.php?stutype=local&keywords=museum&search=Go |
